The solution to a Ford design problem found by a NASA engineer

We had to be very creative at NASA when a malfunction occured in one of our spacecraft in the middle of the Solar system. Once we had a main antenna malfunction. Since repairs or replacement of the failed part were impossible we had to find an alternative solution. The solution, very simplified, was to disable the main antenna and use the low gain antenna for communication with Earth. The data rate was much reduced since the antenna was not designed for that porpose, but the mission was saved.

The same approach was used for this systemic problem in Ford vehicles.
